Lexus has held the world premiere of the 2027 NX today, September 1, unveiling its most extensively updated compact luxury crossover since the current generation launched. The 2027 NX brings a next-generation hybrid system, a significantly larger plug-in hybrid battery, DC fast charging for the first time in a Lexus PHEV, and a refined interior experience built around a new Sensory Concierge cabin feature. The technical heart of the 2027 NX update is the adoption of sixth-generation Lexus hybrid technology — the most advanced version of a system the brand has been refining since it introduced hybrid-electric powertrains to the luxury segment in 2005.
A redesigned hybrid system, silicon carbide (SiC) inverter technology, and a 30% battery capacity increase in the plug-in hybrid variant headline the technical refresh. Silicon carbide is a semiconductor material that reduces inverter energy losses more effectively than conventional silicon-based systems — it is the same technology that Porsche and Hyundai have deployed in their most advanced EV platforms. Its application here in a hybrid system marks a meaningful step forward in the efficiency of Lexus’s electrified powertrain.
The standard hybrid, badged NX 350h, is offered in both front-wheel drive and all-wheel drive configurations, sharing a 2.5-liter inline-four engine with the PHEV. The hybrid model retains the same power as before, but the new system reduces battery weight, improves the sprint to 100 km/h to 7.7 seconds in FWD form or 7.3 seconds in AWD, and increases towing capacity to 1,500 kg.
The PHEV: 30% More Battery, 303 HP, DC Charging
The NX 450h+ plug-in hybrid is where the most consequential changes land. The PHEV model has a new lithium-ion battery with capacity increased by 30% from 18 to 23 kWh. Maximum combined output has been raised by eight percent to 303 hp, and the sprint to 62 mph now takes 6.1 seconds.
DC fast charging capability and a power charge port door are standard on all NX PHEV grades — making the 2027 NX 450h+ the first Lexus plug-in hybrid model to support DC fast charging. A 10-to-80% charge takes approximately 30 minutes at a DC fast charger, and the NX 450h+ targets over 100 km — more than 62 miles — of electric-only range under WLTP testing.
That figure is genuinely significant. The outgoing NX 450h+ offered approximately 37 miles of electric range under the EPA cycle. Doubling that figure meaningfully changes how most owners would use the vehicle day-to-day — covering the majority of urban and suburban commuting entirely on electricity, with the combustion engine reserved for longer journeys.
A transverse battery cell layout lowers the center of gravity while increasing lateral body rigidity — a structural benefit that contributes to both handling precision and crash performance. The new e-Axle integrates the transaxle, motor, and power control unit into a compact single assembly, with SiC power semiconductors reducing inverter losses to improve fuel economy.
Design: Sporty Outside, Cleaner Inside
The 2027 NX’s exterior adopts a sportier stance while maintaining the NX’s recognizable proportions. The update refines the front fascia with revised lighting signatures and grille detailing, and the rear receives complementary changes that bring it in line with Lexus’s current design language.
Lexus Interface with a 14-inch touchscreen display is now standard on all NX grades — replacing the previous split-screen setup on lower trims that drew criticism for its ergonomics. The larger, unified display brings a more modern and consistent experience across the NX range.
Available Sensory Concierge on Luxury and F SPORT grades personalizes the cabin experience through a combination of lighting, sound, and fragrance. The feature, which Lexus has positioned as a distinctly Japanese approach to interior ambiance, allows the driver or passengers to select a cabin mood that adjusts multiple sensory elements simultaneously — creating a more holistic environment rather than adjusting individual settings independently.
Lexus Safety System+ 4.0 delivers enhanced detection capabilities, broader situational awareness, and expanded driver assistance technologies as standard across the 2027 NX lineup — a meaningful upgrade from the LSS+ 3.0 system in the current model.
Improved Dynamics Throughout
Beyond the powertrain and technology updates, Lexus has addressed the NX’s dynamic character across multiple systems. Improved driving dynamics result from updates throughout, including suspension, steering system, accelerator, braking system, and chassis rigidity.
The suspension revisions are aimed at a dual objective: maintaining the NX’s comfortable, luxury-oriented ride quality while improving the precision and responsiveness that the F SPORT grade promises. Chassis rigidity improvements — supported in part by the new transverse battery layout in the PHEV — contribute to a more settled, cohesive feel over imperfect road surfaces.
When It Arrives and What to Expect on Price
The 2027 Lexus NX is scheduled to be introduced across global markets from the end of 2026. US pricing has not been officially announced — official EPA ratings and final US pricing will be available closer to the on-sale date. Based on the current NX 350h starting at $42,625 and the NX 450h+ at $58,950, the 2027 models are expected to carry a modest price increase reflecting the battery and charging upgrades.
For buyers currently considering a luxury compact hybrid SUV, the 2027 NX positions itself more aggressively than its predecessor against the BMW iX3, Mercedes GLC PHEV, and Volvo EX60. The addition of DC fast charging and over 62 miles of electric range in particular close a gap that previously made the NX 450h+ a less compelling choice for buyers who wanted genuine EV-like daily usability from a plug-in hybrid.
