Audi has officially revived the A2 name for a new generation. However, the unusual gasoline and diesel hatchback from the early 2000s has returned as a fully electric compact car designed around efficiency, practicality and lower energy consumption.Unveiled in Paris on September 7, 2026, the new Audi A2 e-tron is the most efficient production vehicle the German brand has ever built. Its most economical configuration consumes just 12.8 kWh of electricity per 100 kilometers under the WLTP testing cycle.

Depending on the battery and motor selected, the compact EV can also travel up to 646 kilometers, or approximately 401 miles, on a single charge.
Four Power Levels and Three Battery Options
Audi will offer the A2 e-tron with four different power outputs. The entry-level version produces 125 kW, equivalent to approximately 170 horsepower, while the most powerful model delivers 240 kW, or about 327 horsepower.
Customers will also be able to choose between three battery capacities:
- 52 kWh
- 61 kWh
- 84 kWh
The longest-range configuration combines the 84kWh battery with a 170kW rear-mounted electric motor. It offers a claimed range of up to 646 kilometers according to WLTP.
Meanwhile, the 140kW model equipped with Audi’s optional efficiency package achieves the lowest energy consumption of the lineup at 12.8 kWh per 100 kilometers. Therefore, the most efficient version and the longest-range model are not exactly the same configuration.
All versions use rear-wheel drive and offer four regenerative braking levels. Drivers can also select a one-pedal driving mode that allows the vehicle to slow down when the accelerator is released.
Fast Charging and Bidirectional Energy
The 84kWh battery supports DC fast charging at up to 183 kW. According to Audi’s official technical information, charging from 10% to 80% takes around 29 minutes under suitable conditions.
The smaller 52kWh battery supports up to 100kW charging and completes the same 10% to 80% session in approximately 24 minutes.
Additionally, the A2 e-tron supports bidirectional charging. Its Vehicle-to-Load system can power external devices such as laptops, tools, camping equipment or electric bicycles.
Vehicle-to-Home functionality will also be available in Germany, Austria and Switzerland with a compatible DC wall box. This allows the vehicle’s battery to supply electricity to a home or store energy generated by solar panels.
Aerodynamics Play a Major Role
The A2 e-tron has a drag coefficient of 0.24, the best figure in Audi’s current compact lineup.
The company achieved this through a largely enclosed underbody, aerodynamic wheels, a controllable front air intake and carefully designed body panels. Flush electric door handles also help reduce resistance.
Unlike conventional mechanical handles, the doors respond to a light touch. Audi says a separate energy storage unit will still allow them to open if the vehicle’s main electrical system fails.
Inside, the A2 e-tron includes an 11.9-inch digital instrument display and a 12.8-inch central touchscreen. Audi has also added a magnetic Fidlock system that allows cup holders, storage accessories and charging cable bags to be attached in different positions.
Price and Release Date
The Audi A2 e-tron will be manufactured at the company’s Ingolstadt plant in Germany. Orders open on September 10, 2026, while the first vehicles are expected to reach European dealerships in December.
German prices begin at €38,200 for the 125kW model with the 52kWh battery. The 84kWh, 170kW version starts at €48,900, while the 240kW flagship costs €51,200.
For now, Audi has designed the vehicle primarily for Europe and has not confirmed availability in the United States or other international markets.
The A2 e-tron represents a different approach to premium electric mobility. Instead of relying only on larger batteries and extreme performance, Audi is focusing on efficiency, usable range and a compact design that could work better in crowded cities.
