Toyota has made its most significant move yet with the RAV4. The sixth-generation 2026 model is a complete redesign that drops conventional gasoline engines entirely, making every version of America’s best-selling compact SUV a hybrid or plug-in hybrid. It is the boldest product decision Toyota has made with the RAV4 in its 30-year history.

Hybrid Only — Across All Seven Trims
The 2026 RAV4 is available only as a hybrid electric vehicle or plug-in hybrid electric vehicle. The standard hybrid produces 226 horsepower with front-wheel drive and 236 horsepower with all-wheel drive — roughly 23 more horsepower than the outgoing gas-only model. The plug-in hybrid raises output to 324 horsepower with an estimated 50 miles of electric-only driving range.
The 2025 lineup offered four trim levels with gas engines and Toyota Safety Sense 2.5. The 2026 redesign expands to seven trims, all electrified, with Toyota Safety Sense 4.0 and a completely new Arene software platform.
Three Distinct Design Personalities
Rather than offering one uniform exterior, Toyota has organized the 2026 RAV4 around three visual themes. The lineup is structured around Core, Rugged, and Sport aesthetics, giving each trim a more deliberate visual identity. A new GR Sport trim joins the range, inspired by motorsport and available exclusively with the plug-in hybrid powertrain.
The exterior adopts Toyota’s hammerhead front end, with large tires, an elevated ride height, and an upright rear cargo area. New color options include Urban Rock, Meteor Shower, Everest, and Storm Cloud.
A More Connected Cabin
Inside, every RAV4 now comes standard with a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster. Higher trims including the XSE, Limited, and GR Sport receive a 12.9-inch touchscreen running Toyota’s new Arene software platform, while other trims use a 10.5-inch touchscreen. Standard equipment across the lineup includes a two-way-close center armrest and Toyota Audio Multimedia connectivity.
Toyota Safety Sense 4.0 is standard on every variant, bringing updated automatic emergency braking, lane-tracing assist, and radar cruise control with improved low-light detection compared to the outgoing system.
Why This Matters
The decision to eliminate gas-only engines from the RAV4 is a significant industry signal. The RAV4 is the second-best-selling vehicle in the United States — after the Ford F-150 — and one of the most influential models in the global compact SUV segment. By making every RAV4 a hybrid, Toyota is effectively telling the market that the era of the non-electrified compact SUV is over, at least for this model.
What This Means for Buyers
For shoppers, the 2026 RAV4 means more power, better fuel economy, and a more connected interior at every trim level — with no version left behind by the transition to electrified powertrains. The plug-in hybrid’s 50-mile electric range addresses the needs of buyers who want significant electric capability without committing fully to a battery-only vehicle. With seven trims and three design themes to choose from, the new RAV4 offers more personalization than any previous generation, while remaining one of the most practical and reliable SUVs in the segment.
