Tesla has introduced a new safety function that allows its Full Self-Driving Supervised system to take control in certain dangerous situations, even when the driver is operating the vehicle manually.

The feature arrives with FSD Supervised software version 14.3.9. According to the release information, the system can activate automatically when it detects that a serious collision is imminent and conventional automatic emergency braking may not be enough.
This represents a notable change in how Tesla uses its driving software. FSD normally controls the vehicle while the driver monitors its behavior. With the new function, the software can monitor a person’s manual driving and intervene when it detects an immediate risk.
More Than Automatic Emergency Braking
Automatic emergency braking normally applies the brakes when sensors detect a possible collision. However, braking alone cannot avoid every crash.
For example, a vehicle may be traveling too quickly to stop before reaching an obstacle. In other situations, steering away from the danger could provide a better response than braking in a straight line.
Tesla’s new system can activate FSD Supervised to control the vehicle when it determines that a head-on collision is imminent and braking may not be sufficient.
Instead of performing only one emergency action, FSD can take control and continue navigating the vehicle after the intervention. The driver remains responsible and must be prepared to regain control.
The System Can Detect Driver Distraction
The software may also intervene when the vehicle detects that the driver is not paying enough attention to the road.
Tesla gives the example of a driver turning around or reaching for something on the rear seat. The interior camera and driver-monitoring system can identify this behavior and determine whether the vehicle is approaching a dangerous situation.
The feature may also activate if FSD Supervised appears to have been disabled accidentally. This could occur if a driver unintentionally disengages the system while the vehicle is performing an important maneuver.
Tesla vehicles use an interior camera and steering-wheel sensors to monitor driver attention. External cameras provide a 360-degree view of traffic, road markings, pedestrians and surrounding obstacles.
FSD Remains a Level 2 Driver-Assistance System
Despite its name, Full Self-Driving Supervised is not a fully autonomous driving system.
Tesla classifies it as SAE Level 2 assistance. This means the software can control acceleration, braking and steering, but the person behind the wheel remains responsible for supervising the vehicle at all times.
Drivers must keep their attention on the road and be ready to intervene. They cannot legally sleep, use the system without supervision or treat the vehicle as an autonomous robotaxi.
Tesla’s FSD evidence dashboard confirms that FSD Supervised remains a Level 2 system. It also acknowledges that comparisons between manual and assisted driving can be affected by variables such as weather, traffic conditions, lighting and route complexity.
A Different Approach to Collision Avoidance
Traditional safety systems usually intervene through isolated functions. These include automatic braking, lane-departure correction and blind-spot assistance.
Tesla’s approach gives a broader driving system temporary control of the car. In theory, this allows the vehicle to combine braking, steering and route planning when responding to a dangerous situation.
However, real-world performance will depend on how accurately the cameras detect obstacles and how the software interprets complex traffic conditions.
The feature should be viewed as an additional safety layer rather than permission for drivers to become distracted.
European Expansion Continues
The update arrives as Tesla seeks broader European approval for FSD Supervised. Slovenia recently became the sixth European country to authorize the system, following the Netherlands, Denmark, Belgium, Estonia and Lithuania.
A wider European decision could take place in October 2026. Tesla has published driving and collision data to support its regulatory case, although the figures and methodology will require independent evaluation.
The new intervention feature was detailed by electrive. Tesla has not presented it as a replacement for attentive driving.
Instead, it shows how advanced driver-assistance software is beginning to operate in the background even when people choose to drive manually.
