BYD has reported its strongest monthly sales performance of 2026, with July figures showing a clear acceleration in international demand. The Chinese automaker delivered a record number of vehicles outside its home market, underscoring how rapidly its global strategy is reshaping the EV industry.

A Record Month Driven by Exports

BYD sold 419,211 new energy vehicles in July, representing a 21.8% increase year-over-year and a 3.9% gain compared with June. International markets remained BYD’s biggest growth engine, with overseas passenger vehicle and pickup sales reaching a record 179,841 units — an increase of 124.3% from the same month last year.

Overseas deliveries accounted for approximately 43% of the month’s total sales, roughly in line with June’s share. That means nearly one in every two BYD vehicles sold in July went to a buyer outside China — a dramatic shift for a brand that, until recently, sold the vast majority of its vehicles domestically.

Domestic Market Still Contracting

The domestic picture remains more complicated. BYD’s domestic sales in July were approximately 239,370 units, down roughly 9% year-on-year — though that decline has narrowed significantly compared to earlier months.

The year-on-year sales growth stood at 0.26% in May and 5.5% in June before accelerating sharply to 21.76% in July. The recovery is gaining speed, but BYD is doing it on international markets, not at home.

Premium Sub-Brands Shine

Off-road luxury brand Fang Cheng Bao set a new sales record with 41,213 units, up around 190% year-on-year, while premium brand Denza contributed 19,196 units, an increase of 68.8%. These results show BYD is not only expanding in volume but also moving upmarket, diversifying beyond affordable vehicles into higher-margin segments.

Full-Year Target Now Unlikely

Despite the strong July, BYD faces a significant challenge in meeting its annual guidance. BYD needs to average roughly 530,000 sales for each of the remaining months to meet even the bottom end of its 5.0–5.5 million full-year target. July’s record of 419,211 units would need to be beaten in every remaining month. Based on early reports, that pace appears very difficult to maintain.

What This Means for the Industry

BYD’s July figures reinforce a broader trend: Chinese EV manufacturers are building a global presence faster than many in the industry expected. With exports now accounting for nearly half of total monthly sales, BYD is no longer primarily a domestic Chinese brand — it is becoming a genuine rival to established automakers in markets across Europe, Latin America, Southeast Asia, and beyond.
