Rivian has officially started delivering its most important electric vehicle yet. The Rivian R2 reached its first customers on June 9, 2026, marking a new chapter for the company.

What Is the Rivian R2 and Why Does It Matter?

The Rivian R2 is a compact electric SUV designed to bring Rivian’s outdoor-ready personality to a broader, more affordable audience. The original Rivian R1S impressed buyers but came with a price that kept it out of reach for many. The R2 was built specifically to change that.

The Rivian R2 is an electric midsize SUV designed with the same authentic SUV character as the larger R1, but with more accessible pricing and urban-friendly dimensions.

In terms of size, the R2 measures 66.9 inches tall, 84.7 inches wide with mirrors, and 185.9 inches long — shorter than a Bronco Sport in height and about three inches shorter in length than the four-door Jeep Wrangler Unlimited. It seats five passengers and is aimed squarely at shoppers considering models like the Tesla Model Y, Hyundai Ioniq 5, or Ford Mustang Mach-E.

Rivian plans to build up to 155,000 R2 units per year, signaling serious ambitions for high-volume production.

Trims, Prices, and What Each One Offers

The R2 launches with its most powerful version first and will add more affordable trims gradually over the next year and a half.

The R2 Performance starts at $57,990 and comes with two electric motors producing 656 horsepower, with all-wheel drive. Rivian estimates a 0-to-60 mph time of 3.6 seconds and a range of more than 300 miles. Standard features on the Performance include 21-inch Sport wheels, semi-active suspension, tow hooks, and yellow brake calipers. A Launch Package is also available for a limited time, adding a special key fob, tow pack, and the exclusive Launch Green paint color.

Next in line is the R2 Premium, which arrives in early 2027 starting at $53,990, producing 500 horsepower with a 4.9-second 0-to-60 time and 330 miles of estimated range.

For buyers focused on value, the entry-level R2 Standard is expected in late 2027 at around $45,000, with a single rear motor, rear-wheel drive, and more than 265 miles of range. Whether Rivian ultimately brings this most affordable version to market will depend on how earlier production ramps go.

Range, Capability, and Key Features

Range has been a top concern for EV buyers, and the R2 addresses it seriously. According to EPA estimates, the R2 Performance can travel up to 330 miles on a single charge. It also offers a maximum payload capacity of 1,168 pounds and a towing capacity of up to 4,400 pounds.

Off-road capability is a priority too. The R2 has 9.6 inches of ground clearance, a 25-degree approach angle, a 26-degree departure angle, and a 20.6-degree breakover angle — numbers that make it genuinely capable on rough terrain, not just on paved roads.

Rivian has expanded its Normal, Illinois facility to handle R2 production volume, with its Georgia plant expected to come online later in the decade. Early reservation holders — those who placed $100 deposits — are receiving their order invitations in batches starting from the June 9 launch date.

What This Means for Buyers

The Rivian R2 arrives at a time when the electric SUV market is intensely competitive. Buyers now have more EV options than ever, with strong choices from established brands and newer entrants alike.

What sets the R2 apart is its combination of off-road credibility, a well-regarded brand reputation built on the R1 lineup, and an adventure-ready identity that few electric SUVs can match. The performance numbers are also genuinely impressive at this price range.

The main consideration for practical buyers is timing. The most affordable R2 trims are still more than a year away, and the launch Performance version at nearly $58,000 positions the R2 as a premium product for now. Those who can wait may find that the $45,000 Standard trim — if and when it arrives — represents the more compelling value proposition.

For now, first-mover buyers are getting a fast, capable, and range-confident electric SUV with the full Rivian experience baked in. That alone is enough to make the R2 one of the most closely watched launches of 2026.
