The 2026 Mercedes-Benz S-Class facelift is one of the most comprehensive mid-cycle updates the iconic luxury sedan has ever received. Beyond a revised exterior, it introduces a new software platform, a plug-in hybrid powertrain, and a deeply redesigned digital interior.

A New Software Brain at the Center of Everything

The biggest change in the 2026 S-Class facelift is not what you can see — it is what runs underneath. Mercedes-Benz has integrated its new MB.OS operating system across the entire vehicle, turning the S-Class into a fully software-defined car.

MB.OS acts as a central platform that connects the infotainment system, driver assistance sensors, suspension controls, and powertrain management under a single software architecture. The system supports over-the-air updates, which means the car can receive functional improvements without visiting a dealership.

The interior reflects this digital shift. A new MBUX Superscreen brings together a 14.4-inch OLED central touchscreen, a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, and a 12.3-inch passenger display — all under a seamless glass surface. The virtual assistant now integrates artificial intelligence, combining inputs from ChatGPT, Google Gemini, and Bing to handle natural language requests more fluidly. Rear passengers also benefit from 13.1-inch entertainment screens that support video streaming and video conferencing.

Updated Design, Hybrid Power, and Advanced Driving Assistance

On the outside, the 2026 S-Class facelift refines rather than reinvents. The front grille grows slightly, now featuring an illuminated outline on select trims — a design signature previously reserved for electric models. The headlights adopt a three-point star LED motif, making the car instantly recognizable in both day and night.

Mechanically, the update brings a refined plug-in hybrid powertrain to the lineup. The S 450e combines a 3.0-litre turbocharged six-cylinder petrol engine with an electric motor and a 22 kWh battery. Mercedes-Benz says this setup produces 435 hp and 680 Nm of torque, with an electric-only range of up to 115 km under WLTP conditions. The battery can charge from 10 to 80 percent in approximately 20 minutes using a 60 kW charger.

The driver assistance suite has also been upgraded. Every variant now includes MB Drive Assist as standard, supported by up to ten cameras, five radar units, and twelve ultrasonic sensors. In markets where regulations permit — starting with China and then the United States — Drive Assist Pro enables Level 3 autonomous driving, allowing the system to manage the vehicle in specific traffic conditions while the driver remains ready to resume control.

Why This Update Matters

The 2026 S-Class facelift positions Mercedes-Benz’s flagship sedan directly in competition with the BMW 7 Series and Audi A8, but it takes a distinct approach by centering the update on software and connectivity rather than purely mechanical changes.

For buyers, this means the car they purchase today can continue improving over time through software updates — a shift that was previously associated mainly with electric vehicle brands. The plug-in hybrid option also makes the S-Class more accessible in markets with stricter emissions regulations or strong incentives for electrified vehicles.

Mercedes-Benz launched the updated S-Class in India on June 15, 2026, with a starting price of Rs 2.20 crore for the S 450e variant. Global availability is rolling out progressively throughout 2026, with additional powertrain options and trim levels expected to follow in different markets.
