BMW has officially introduced the eighth-generation 3 Series, bringing a major technological transformation to one of its most recognizable vehicles.

The new lineup introduces BMW’s Neue Klasse design philosophy and includes the first fully electric 3 Series, marketed under the BMW i3 name.

Announced on September 29 and detailed in a September 30 press release, the redesigned sedan combines electric mobility, advanced digital technology and updated gasoline engines.

The new generation also introduces significant improvements in driving assistance, interior technology and overall vehicle performance.

The First Fully Electric BMW 3 Series

One of the biggest developments is the introduction of the BMW i3 50 xDrive.

Unlike the previous i3 hatchback, the new vehicle is a fully electric sedan built on BMW’s Neue Klasse architecture.

Its dual-motor electric powertrain produces 463 horsepower and 476 lb-ft of torque.

BMW estimates that the i3 50 xDrive will deliver up to 468 miles of driving range under EPA testing.

The figure remains a manufacturer estimate until official certification is completed.

With those specifications, the electric i3 becomes an important addition to BMW’s growing electric vehicle portfolio.

Fast Charging and New Battery Technology

BMW has equipped the electric i3 with its sixth-generation eDrive technology.

The system combines an advanced high-voltage battery with a new electric drivetrain designed to improve efficiency and charging performance.

The vehicle supports DC fast charging at up to 400 kW.

According to BMW, drivers could recover as much as 208 miles of driving range in approximately 10 minutes under ideal charging conditions.

Actual charging performance will depend on battery temperature, charging infrastructure and other operating conditions.

The new technology also supports bidirectional charging, allowing the vehicle to potentially supply electricity to compatible external systems.

A Completely Redesigned Exterior

The eighth-generation BMW 3 Series introduces a modern interpretation of the manufacturer’s traditional design.

Its front section incorporates horizontal lighting and redesigned kidney grilles.

Sculpted body panels, shorter overhangs and wider proportions give the sedan a distinctive appearance.

Despite the changes, BMW has maintained the recognizable silhouette associated with the 3 Series.

Electric and gasoline models share a common design philosophy, although their underlying vehicle architectures are different.

BMW will also offer various wheel designs and exterior customization options.

A New Digital Interior

Inside, the 2027 BMW 3 Series introduces the company’s Panoramic iDrive system.

The technology combines a panoramic information display with a 17.9-inch central touchscreen.

An optional three-dimensional head-up display provides additional driving information.

BMW Operating System X manages the vehicle’s digital functions, connectivity and entertainment features.

The redesigned steering wheel incorporates illuminated controls that provide access to commonly used functions.

BMW has also integrated additional personalization options, allowing drivers to configure the vehicle’s displays and driving experience.

The result is a cabin designed around digital technology while maintaining the driver-focused characteristics traditionally associated with BMW.

Gasoline Engines Remain Available

BMW is not abandoning combustion engines with the introduction of the new generation.

The 2027 lineup will also include updated gasoline-powered models equipped with 48-volt mild-hybrid technology.

The BMW 330 and 330 xDrive feature a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine producing 255 horsepower.

Both models accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in approximately 5.9 seconds.

For customers seeking additional performance, BMW has introduced the M350 xDrive.

This model produces 437 horsepower and accelerates from 0 to 60 mph in approximately 3.9 seconds.

It also introduces additional performance-oriented technologies, including a new Drift Moment function.

Prices and Availability

BMW has announced the following starting prices for the United States:

  • BMW 330: $49,900.
  • BMW 330 xDrive: $51,900.
  • BMW M350 xDrive: $65,900.
  • BMW i3 50 xDrive: $61,500.

All prices exclude the additional $1,350 destination and handling charge.

Pricing and specifications may vary across international markets.

The redesigned lineup represents a significant evolution for a model that has played a central role in BMW’s history for more than five decades.

A New Chapter for BMW

The arrival of the eighth-generation 3 Series demonstrates BMW’s strategy of offering different powertrain options within the same vehicle family.

Customers can choose between traditional gasoline engines with mild-hybrid assistance and a fully electric drivetrain.

The electric i3 introduces a new generation of battery technology, while the gasoline variants retain familiar performance characteristics.

With its updated styling, advanced interior and expanded powertrain lineup, the 2027 BMW 3 Series marks an important milestone in the evolution of BMW’s most recognizable sedans.
