After more than two years of camouflaged prototype sightings, polarizing concept reveals, and intense industry debate about whether Jaguar’s radical reinvention could actually work, the moment of truth is almost here. Jaguar’s Type 01 — the first production car from the brand’s completely rethought lineup — will make its world debut in New York in October 2026. And it will start at $150,000.

A Brand Reborn From Scratch

To understand what the Type 01 represents, it helps to understand the position Jaguar chose to put itself in. Over the past two years, Jaguar discontinued its entire existing lineup — the XE, XF, F-Type, E-Pace, F-Pace, and I-Pace — and halted retail sales while it prepared a new generation of fully electric vehicles. The brand went from being a familiar face in dealership lots to being essentially invisible in showrooms, all in the name of a transformation that many in the industry called reckless.

The Type 01 is the answer to all of that skepticism.

What the Type 01 Is

The Type 01 is the first of a planned trio of ultraluxury electric vehicles from Jaguar, each expected to carry a starting price in the region of $150,000 and positioned to compete directly with Bentley, Aston Martin, and Mercedes-Maybach.

The car is a stately grand tourer measuring approximately 204.7 inches — about 5.2 meters — in length, with a 126-inch wheelbase. That makes it genuinely large, in the manner of a proper grand touring car rather than a sports coupe. It seats four in a 2+2 configuration and features a panoramic roof that floods the interior with light.

The design builds directly on the Type 00 concept that Jaguar revealed in December 2024 at Miami Art Week — a vehicle that generated some of the most intense reaction of any automotive design in recent years, with opinions ranging from genuinely excited to deeply alienated. The production Type 01 carries the same fundamental design language, with some modifications for real-world use.

Based on pre-reveal descriptions from journalists who have been given early access, the cabin features bespoke materials, a GT-appropriate rather than lounge-like interior layout, and subtle hints of metallic detailing that echo the concept’s visual references.

The Performance Specification

Full powertrain details have not been officially confirmed ahead of the October debut, but based on what Jaguar has disclosed and early reports: the Type 01 is expected to use a dual- or tri-motor electric powertrain producing well over 575 horsepower in base configuration, with higher-output variants potentially available. Range is expected to exceed 400 miles on a full charge.

The car is built on Jaguar’s bespoke Jaguar Electrified Architecture platform, designed from the ground up for the brand’s new EV lineup. It supports rapid charging and is engineered for the kind of long-distance, refined driving experience that defines grand touring.

Why Jaguar Chose New York for the Debut

The choice of New York as the debut location is deliberate. New York is one of the strongest markets in the US for ultra-luxury and European-brand vehicles. It is also a city with significant media and financial industry presence — the audience Jaguar is trying to reach with a $150,000 electric car is precisely the kind of buyer who lives and works there.

JLR’s Chief Growth Officer Lennard Hoornik said the debut will be handled in a “very special way,” signaling that Jaguar intends the reveal to be a cultural moment, not just a product announcement. He also expressed strong confidence in the commercial potential: “If you’ve got a great proposition, you’ve got a great emotion, then there will be great numbers coming out.”

A Design Gamble That May Be Paying Off

The early sentiment around the Type 01 has shifted considerably since the Type 00 concept first appeared. Hoornik noted that the sentiment, which was extremely negative when the concept debuted, has turned around into a positive one as more people have seen test cars and pre-production models.

Whether that sentiment translates into sales orders at $150,000 — in a market where Bentley, Aston Martin, Porsche, and Mercedes-Benz all have established relationships with exactly the buyers Jaguar is pursuing — remains to be seen. What is clear is that the Type 01 is not an incremental update to anything. It is a completely new vehicle, from a completely redesigned brand, targeting a completely different price point than the Jaguar that most buyers remember. October will tell us whether the gamble was worth it.
