Tesla has officially launched the Model Y SUV in India, marking a major milestone for the country’s growing electric vehicle market. The car now comes in two variants — Standard RWD and Long Range RWD — offering improved performance, longer range, and optional autonomous driving technology.

Model Y Now Available in Two Variants

Tesla’s Model Y is now offered in Standard RWD and Long Range RWD trims. Both versions feature a single-motor rear-wheel-drive setup, maintaining Tesla’s signature balance of speed, efficiency, and control. Despite being an electric SUV, the Model Y delivers a sporty performance that fits well with Indian highways and urban roads.

Improved Battery and Extended Range

The biggest upgrade comes in the Long Range RWD variant, which now features a new 84.2kWh battery pack, replacing the older 78.1kWh unit. This enhancement boosts the WLTP-certified range from 622 km to 661 km, an increase of nearly 39 km on a single charge.

The Standard RWD model continues with a 64kWh battery, offering around 500 km of range. Both variants retain the same electric motor setup — enough to provide strong acceleration and a smooth driving experience.

Performance and Speed

Even with the battery upgrade, the Long Range RWD maintains an impressive acceleration. It can sprint from 0 to 100 km/h in just 5.6 seconds, while the Standard RWD takes 5.9 seconds. Both models reach a top speed of 201 km/h, making them some of the quickest EVs in their category.

Fast Charging Capability

Tesla’s super-fast DC charging technology remains one of its biggest strengths. The Long Range Model Y can add 267 km of range in just 15 minutes, while the Standard variant can gain 238 km in the same time. This makes long-distance travel far more convenient and eliminates the common concern of charging delays.

Pricing in India

Despite the upgrades, Tesla has kept the prices unchanged, making the new Model Y even more appealing to potential buyers.

  • Standard RWD: ₹59.89 lakh (ex-showroom)
  • Long Range RWD: ₹67.89 lakh (ex-showroom)

Full Self-Driving Package (FSD)

One of the most exciting additions to the Indian lineup is the Full Self-Driving (FSD) package, offered as a ₹6 lakh add-on. This feature allows the car to assist with steering, acceleration, and braking under certain conditions — reducing the need for constant driver input.

While some features may require government approval before activation in India, the FSD system represents one of the most advanced autonomous driving technologies available globally. It not only enhances convenience but also boosts overall safety through advanced sensors and real-time monitoring.

Final Thoughts

With the launch of the Tesla Model Y in India, the company has taken a strong step toward transforming the country’s electric mobility landscape. The Long Range variant’s extended 661 km range, powerful battery, and optional self-driving tech make it a standout in the premium EV segment. Combined with Tesla’s signature design, speed, and innovation, the Model Y is set to redefine what Indian buyers can expect from an electric SUV.
