Mercedes-Benz has expanded its G-Class lineup in India with the launch of the all-new G 450d SUV, introducing a diesel option for the first time in the country. With this addition, the G-Class range now offers diesel, petrol, and electric powertrains, marking a new milestone for the brand’s legendary off-roader.
According to Santosh Iyer, Managing Director and CEO of Mercedes-Benz India, the new G 450d reflects the company’s commitment to offering customers a complete range of powertrains. He described the SUV as a “blend of power and efficiency” designed to meet the growing demand for diesel variants in the Indian luxury segment.
Powertrain and Performance
At the heart of the Mercedes-Benz G 450d lies a 3.0-litre inline six-cylinder diesel engine paired with a 48V mild-hybrid system. This setup delivers 362 bhp and an impressive 750 Nm of torque, along with an additional 20 bhp boost from the integrated starter generator.
Despite its size and weight, the SUV is remarkably quick — it sprints from 0 to 100 km/h in just 5.8 seconds and reaches a top speed of 210 km/h. The mild-hybrid technology ensures smoother acceleration and better fuel efficiency, making the G 450d as capable on highways as it is off the beaten path.
Off-Road Capability
True to its heritage, the G 450d retains the iconic off-road DNA of the G-Class. It features three mechanical differential locks, a ladder-frame chassis, and a double-wishbone front suspension paired with a rigid rear axle — all designed to tackle extreme terrains with ease.
Its off-road figures are equally impressive: 100% gradeability, 241 mm of ground clearance, a 70 cm water wading depth, and 31° approach and 30° departure angles. These numbers underline why the G-Class continues to be one of the most respected off-road SUVs in the world.
Technology and Luxury
Inside, the G 450d is packed with the latest technology and comfort features. The cabin is powered by the MBUX NTG7 infotainment system, which includes dual 12.3-inch displays, augmented reality navigation, and wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay support.
Mercedes has also introduced a new off-road cockpit interface that displays real-time data such as steering angle, compass direction, altitude, tyre pressure, and differential lock status. A highlight feature — the “Transparent Hood” — uses camera feeds to give drivers a virtual view of the terrain beneath the vehicle, improving visibility during off-road drives.
Cabin Experience
The interior of the G 450d reflects Mercedes-Benz’s signature approach to luxury. The SUV features two-tone Nappa leather upholstery, a Burmester 3D surround sound system with Dolby Atmos, and customizable ambient lighting. Through the MANUFAKTUR personalization program, buyers can also choose exclusive paint shades, trims, and finishes to create a truly bespoke experience.
